Nikko geta (footwear)

Nikko geta was changed into "gomen geta" with a wooden base attached
to zori (sandals) as footwear in the precincts of the Shinto shrine of
Mt. Nikko during the Edo period (1603-1868).
However, since this pedestal was a difficult thing to wear in a U-shaped shape, it came to be able to make one that made the pedestal similar to an ordinary geta in the middle of the Meiji era (1868-1912).
This improved version of the Gomen geta was later used by citizens, and came to be called "Nikko geta". |

- The Nikko geta was created as footwear within the shrine precincts of Mount Nikko.
Those entering the precincts of the Shinto shrine during the Edo period
used to wear "Gomen geta," a pair of sandals with a wooden base
attached to them, but this stand was difficult to wear because of its U-shaped
shape.
By the middle of the Meiji era (1868-1912), it was possible to make a type of geta that resembled an ordinary clog.
- This improved version of the Gomen geta was later used by citizens, and
came to be called "Nikko geta".
- In the 1940s, there were concerns about a shortage of successors to the
Nikko geta craftsmen.
One of the first trainees is Mr. Masasi Yamamoto, who has been actively trying to train successors in Nikko City.
- He became a masterful Nikko geta craftsman while enduring the weight of traditional cultural inheritance called Nikko geta.
The main materials used to make hikosan geta include bamboo bark, which is woven into the base wood and sandals, and cotton and yoshu hemp used for the nasal stripes.

- According to Mr. Yamamoto, bamboo bark responds very well to humidity and
dryness, making it a comfortable footwear, especially in the summer.
At present, the company procures bamboo bark and nasal straps directly
from the production area.
- He dyes bamboo bark to make a new type of "fashionable" Nikko
clogs.
- Yamamoto's workshop is located in the Nikko Wood Carving Village Craft
Center.
The studio is just to the right of the entrance, but he works here all day long to make his custom Nikko geta.
It's a live sale.
- He knits the bamboo bark one by one, checking the shape of the clogs, sometimes
to make sure they are the right size.
Once it's knitted, there's a process of crushing it flat.
Then, to attach the zori, they are sewn with hemp thread to the 19 holes
in the pedestal.
- This is what handmade is all about, and it makes sense to me.

- Born in Imaichi in 1954.
- Participated in the Nikko geta succession training project organized by
Nikko City and learned the techniques.
- 1996 Demonstration of Nikko clogs to the Crown Prince and his wife at the
Winter National Athletic Meet in Nikko
- Demonstrated at the National Technical Exhibition held at the Science Museum
for the seventh consecutive year in 1997.

- Generally, the standard size (foot size) is 7.5 inches (actual size of geta = about 23cm).
Wear clogs so that the toes and heels are rounded and about 2cm in front
and back protrudes from the clogs.
- Therefore, 23cm is the standard clogs for a person of about 25cm in general
footwear.
Popular clogs are the ukon type (zori type) and two-teeth clogs.
Grilling will be with and without, but will be to your liking.
- In general, baked goods become popular because they appear to have a closed
footing.

We are sorry to inform you that we will be revising our prices due to various
circumstances.
- The price is calculated based on the size of the base wood, burning wood,
nasal strap, and bamboo skin (dyed bamboo skin).
- Regular Nikko clogs are available for 28,000 yen (general size), excluding tax.
A burnt (black base wood), nasal strap and dyed bamboo bark are added as
options.
- Please consult with us on a case-by-case basis, as we can respond to your
requests.
- We will provide you with a quotation and delivery date.
