[Ushwakamaru and Tengu]
- Benkei was in his mother's womb for 18 months (three years in "Benkei
Monogatari"), and when he was born, he looked like a two- or three-year-old
child with his hair growing so long that it hid his shoulders, and his
back and front teeth were all sprouting.
- His father tried to kill him as this was a demon child, but his aunt took him in and named him Oniwaka, and he was raised in Kyoto.
- He is admitted to Mt. Hiei but is kicked out for not studying and being too unruly.
Oniwaka shaved his own hair and called himself Musashibo Benkei.
After that, he went to Harima Province, where he repeated his rampage and
set the tower of Shoshazan ablaze.
- Eventually, Benkei sets out to get a thousand swords in Kyoto. Benkei attacked
a passerby and dueled with a samurai with a sword that passed by, and collected
up to 999 bottles, but just as he was about to collect one more, he met
Yoshitsune passing by while blowing a flute on the Gojo Bridge.
Benkei noticed Yoshitsune's beautiful sword that he put in his waist, and
challenged him with the sword, but he was no match for Yoshitsune, who
was so light that he flew over the railings, and he was beaten back.
- Benkei surrendered and became a retainer of Yoshitsune ever since.
